All about Thomas & Friends

Thomas and Friends is a British children's television series, first broadcast on Central Television in June 1984. Until Season 7, which premiered in 2003, it was named Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends. It is based on The Railway Series of books created by the Reverend W. V. Awdry.

Thomas is a cheeky, fussy little engine who wears #1 on his side and never lets anyone forget it. Joining him in his adventures on the Island of Sodor are his engine friends, including cheerful Percy, moody James and the proud but boastful Gordon. They are joined by the coaches Annie and Clarabel, Bertie the Bus, Terence the Tractor and Harold the Helicopter, to name a few. Sir Topham Hatt, Superintendent of the railroad, is the kindly boss who keeps everyone in order.

Thomas the Tank Engine

Thomas The Tank Engine was brought for the building of Sodor Railway many years ago. He was always shunting for the bigger engines, and longed to come out of the station yards and see what the world was really like. his chance came after a few months when he was to pull the Express for Henry when he was ill, and failed by leaving the train behind back at the station, but the passengers forgave him for that. Thomas is very happy now and works with his Friends Edward, Henry, Gordon, James and Percy at the station.

Edward (Thomas & Friends) Edward The Blue Engine is  No.2 Engine based on an LNER D40 class 4-4-0 tender engine. Edward is old and is known to the others as a back engine. Edward was bought to Sodor for helping to build the Railway with Thomas many years ago. He has his own line which runs from a station called Wellsworth onto a beautiful Branchline far across sodor and ends and Brendam Docks. Edward is a kind and Gentle engine and he never doesn't bash trucks like all the other engines do. Edward can often be seen Helping Gordon up the hill with His Express trains.
Henry (Thomas & Friends) Henry The Green Engine is Sodor's No.3 Engine, he was bought to help with the Building of Sodor many years ago with Thomas and Edward. He has often been known to be accident prone and very unwell in some cases. Our first discovery about Henry was when the fat Controller ordered an Atlantic Engine from the other railway, what he received was an experimental LNER A3 gone wrong. Poor Henry had a small fireboc which couldn't make very much steam. He had an accident and was sent to crewe where he was rebuilt into an LMS 4-6-0.
 Gordon (Thomas & Friends)
Gordon The Big Blue Engine (No.4) is a very powerful and heavy Express Engine, he pulls all the passenger trains on Sodor and has loved doing so. Gordon is high Spirited and loves to somtimes show off in front of the other engines. Gordon is based on an LNER A3 like the Flying Scotsman, the world famous steam locomotive of the NRM. Gordon had 2 accidents on Sodor, his first one was on Edwards hill with his silly Trucks and the second after he Ran off the Rails into a dirty Smelly Ditch.

 James (Thomas & Friends)

James The Red Engine (No.5) is a somtimes respectful engine and somtiems just plain silly. He likes to think of himself as a really splendid engine. This can occasionally lead to grandiose ideas about the sort of work suitable for such a noble creature, which invariably lands James in trouble. James is a mixed traffic engine, which means he can pull both passenger coaches and freight cars. James arrived after Gordon. He was always getting into trouble with the Fat Controller.

 Percy (Thomas & Friends)

Percy the Saddle Tank Engine is the sixth Engine to arrive on Sodor for helping with Passengers and Freight in the yards. This little chap is normally quite happy puffing around the yard. He's always keen to oblige, a fact of which the other engines are apt to take advantage. Percy often works with Trucks in Quarry's and Harbours. Brendam Docks is usually where percy is seen working and delivering goods. He doesn't like being called names and is always keen to get his own back.

 Toby (Thomas & Friends)

Toby The Steam Tram Engine is an old-fashioned tram engine who was brought by Sir Topham Hatt to the Island to help out after his own line closed. He and his faithful coach Henrietta are always happy to work, having once nearly been scrapped. Toby is Number 7 on his line and looks like The LNER J70. Toby was a fine example of a working tram engine and get's along with other very well, sometimes. He work mainly up an outlying quarry line.

 Duck GWR (Thomas & Friends)

Duck The GWR Engine is a cheerful, busy tank engine. He'll stand no nonsense whatever from the larger engines who try to order him about. Duck's real name is Montague. He received his nickname because they say he "waddles" down the tracks. he is the 8th Engine to arrive on Sodor and was bought to help Percy run his trains on time and keep things in order for the Fat Controller. Ducks' Original Number was 5741 but later he was given the number 8.

Donald and Douglas (Thomas & Friends)

Donald and his brother Douglas are Scottish twins who hate to be parted. Their antics sometimes lead to trouble, but they're hard workers and particularly good at plowing snow. When they first arrived on Sodor, Sir Topham Hatt was expecting a British Railway J15 Goods Engine No. 57646, what he found was that Engine No. 57647 had also arrived with 57646, and they had both apparently lost their numbers on the way to Sodor. Donald was Engine 9 and Douglas was Engine 10.

 Diesel (Thomas and Friends)

Devious Diesel is the meanest and rudest Diesel Engine who ever visited Sodor. When he first arrived on the Island he was mean to Duck and caused a great deal of damage to some trucks in the yards. Duck laughed at Diesels attempts to prove he is better, but then Diesel told lies about Duck and the Fat Controller sent him away to work with Edward for a day, and after that Diesel was found out and sent away. But he keeps coming back for more trouble.

 Spencer (Thomas and Friends)

Spencer The Silver Bullet Engine is the private engine of the Duke and Duchess who once visited the Island of Sodor. He is very sleek, grand and proud. Gordon was jealous when the other engines declared him the fastest engine in the world. However, Spencer's pride caused him trouble when he doesn't take Gordon's advice to take on plenty of water before tackling the hills. He ran out of water on Gordon's hill, and Gordon had to come to the rescue to pull Spencer to the special party.

Harold (Thomas & Friends)

Harold The Helicopter is a very useful Helicopter who fly's all over Sodor looking out for engines in trouble. He has always been a great friends of the engines. He enjoys being part of the railway and is always happy to lend a helping hand. Harold brings a welcome spot of dash to the quiet landscape of Sodor whenever he appears, even if the noise he makes is occasionally wearing. He is good-hearted and the engines are always pleased to see him.

Fat Controller (Thomas & Friends)

Sir Topham Hatt is the head of the Railway and it's his job to make sure the Thomas the train and the other engines are Really Useful and Right on Time. His rotund shape and his firm but kind attitude towards the engines and workers earned him the nickname "The Fat Controller". He was awarded a knighthood for his services to the railway industry.
