Arthur (Thomas & Friends) When Arthur first came to the Island, he had never been in an accident. He was very careful and very proud of his spotless record. Thomas was jealous and schemed to cause Arthur to get into his very first accident. Thomas apologized to Arthur and now the two are friends. Arthur is a handsome engine, red with the letters LMS on his side.
 
 
 Ben (Thomas & Friends)

Ben is Bill's identical twin in every respect. The twins are probably the most teasing and mischievous characters of the whole railway family. Bill and Ben have shown themselves to be very useful; after a rockslide at the Quarry, the brothers' quick thinking saved the workers and brought them to safety.

 

 Bert (Thomas & Friends)
Bert, along with Rex and Mike, works on the Small Railway. He is very proud of his blue coat. He arrived on the Island after his railway in England closed. He is not afraid to get back at someone if he thinks he has been wronged.
 
 
 
 Bertram the Old Warrior
Bertram the “old warrior” is a little old Engine who used to work at an abandoned mine near a castle. He earned the nickname "Old Warrior" by being brave. Toby once mistakenly thought Bertram was a ghost.
 
 
 
 
 Big City Engine

The Big City Engine is a quarrelsome engine from London. He travels from time to time for an overnight stay at the Big Station.

 

 
 
 

Bill is Ben's identical twin in every respect. The twins are probably the most teasing and mischievous characters of the whole railway family. The initials on their boiler "SCC" stand for Sodor China Clay, which they haul around the island. Bill and Ben work at the Sodor China Clay Company as well as the harbor. 

 

 Billy (Thomas & Friends)
When Billy first arrived on the Railway, Thomas was asked by The Fat Controller to show Billy around. But Billy misconstrued Thomas' advice for bossiness and so refused to listen to him, causing Billy to fail to complete his deliveries. At last, Thomas lost patience and told Billy to do his own thing. Billy was delighted, but his happiness was short-lived as he swiftly ran out of coal and water. In future, Billy paid attention to advice and worked hard with every job he did.
 
 Boco (Thomas & Friends)
BoCo is a decent diesel with a sense of humor despite having to deal with Bill and Ben.
 
 
 

 

City of Truro 
The City of Truro is a famous GWR Engine that once visited the Island of Sodor and became Duck's friend. Gordon was very jealous of the visiting celebrity.

 

 

Culdee 

Culdee is a mountain railway train, equipped with a face at each end. He is very sensible and has great respect for the dangers of Culdee Fell, the mountain he climbs. His coach Catherine helps him travel safely up and down the mountains.

 

 D199 The Diesel

D 199 is a Blue diesel with a bright yellow face. He believes that all important jobs should be left to diesels, and steam engines are only good for his parts. Sir Topham Hatt sent him away for causing too much trouble.

 

 

 Daisy (Thomas & Friends)
Daisy is a classy, sassy passenger diesel. When she first came to Sodor, she believed that she should only carry passengers, and never pull trucks. She learned quickly the importance of teamwork and now helps out however she can.
 
 
 
 Dennis (Thomas & Friends)
Dennis is a very lazy gray diesel engine, who will do just about anything to get out of doing work.
 
 
 
 
 Derek (Thomas & Friends)

Derek the Diesel formerly known as Paxman Diesel, Derek is a kind and helpful engine. Derek tends to become over-heated and frequently burns out his engine.

 

 

 

Diesel is the meanest and rudest Diesel Engine who ever visited Sodor. When he first arrived on the Island he was mean to Duck and caused a great deal of damage to some trucks in the yards. Duck laughed at Diesels attempts to prove he is better, but then Diesel told lies about Duck and the Fat Controller sent him away to work with Edward for a day, and after that Diesel was found out and sent away. But he keeps coming back for more trouble.

 Diesel 10 (Thomas & Friends)
Diesel 10 is a renegade diesel engine on the Island of Sodor who is 10 out of 10 for brutal strength and devious deeds and out to destroy the harmony of Sir Topham Hatt's Railway.
 
 
 
 
Dodge (Thomas & Friends)
Dodge and his twin Splatter are Diesel 10's silly sidekicks. They plot and scheme, but are not really quite as tough as they would like to think they are.
 
 
 
 
 Donald & Douglas Donald and his brother Douglas are Scottish twins who hate to be parted. Their antics sometimes lead to trouble, but they're hard workers and particularly good at plowing snow. When they first arrived on Sodor, Sir Topham Hatt was expecting a British Railway J15 Goods Engine No. 57646, what he found was that Engine No. 57647 had also arrived with 57646, and they had both apparently lost their numbers on the way to Sodor. Donald was Engine 9 and Douglas was Engine 10.
 Duck (Thomas & Friends)

Duck The GWR Engineis a cheerful, busy tank engine. He'll stand no nonsense whatever from the larger engines who try to order him about. Duck's real name is Montague. He received his nickname because they say he "waddles" down the tracks. he is the 8th Engine to arrive on Sodor and was bought to help Percy run his trains on time and keep things in order for the Fat Controller. Ducks' Original Number was 5741 but later he was given the number 8.  

 Duncan

Duncan is a plain speaking engine, he keeps busy and means well. Often bouncy and occasionally rude, Duncan is famous for singing, swaying and swiveling around. His driver calls him "Rock and Roll".

 

                              

Edward (Thomas & Friends)
Edward The Blue Engine is  No.2 Engine based on an LNER D40 class 4-4-0 tender engine. Edward is old and is known to the others as a back engine. Edward was bought to Sodor for helping to build the Railway with Thomas many years ago. He has his own line which runs from a station called Wellsworth onto a beautiful Branchline far across sodor and ends and Brendam Docks. Edward is a kind and gentle engine and he never bash trucks like all the other engines do. Edward can often be seen helping Gordon up the hill with his Express trains.          
 
Emily (Thomas & Friends) Emily is a beautiful and graceful Single Sterling Engine with a brass dome. When she first came to the Island, she accidentally offended Thomas when she pulled Annie and Clarabel by mistake. However, she was quick to apologize and showed her bravery by rescuing Oliver and Toad when they were headed for a nasty accident at a crossing. She received her own beautiful new coaches from Sir Topham Hatt, and hasn't pulled Annie and Clarabel since.
 Fearless Freddie
Fearless Freddie is an old warhorse engine wearing the number seven who has returned from the works. He challenges Rheneas to many races and wins by using a secret short-cut. Freddie must show everyone his short-cut in order to get to Rheneas before it's too late after he derails from racing too fast down the line.
 
 
 Fergus
Fergus is a blue traction engine who shunts trucks at the Cement Works. Reliable and down to earth, Fergus knows the rule book by heart.
 
 
 
 
 
 Flora (Thomas & Friends)
Flora is the new steam tram on Sodor, and her tram car is her pride and joy. She's proud to be able to travel on roads or tracks. She's very happy to be one of the Sodor engines and delighted to be working with Toby.
 
 
 
 
Flying Scotsman 
Flying Scotsman - Called an "extra special engine" by his owner, the Flying Scotsman pulls two tenders and was the second engine to travel 100 miles per hour!
 
 
Frank Thomas Engine 
Frank is a diesel engine who tends to be grumpy when left out of things. Though he may have a bad attitude at times, Frank knows the importance of friendship and teamwork.
 
 
 
Godred 
Godred was a conceited, careless engine who worked the Culdee Fell Mountain. It was his recklessness that caused him to derail and tumble down the mountainside. After his recovery from the bottom of the mountain, he was placed in the back of the shed and his parts were used to repair Culdee, Lord Harry, and Wilfred. Godred was named after a king, which probably explains his "high and mighty" attitude.
 
 Gordon (Thomas & Friends)
Gordon is the senior member of the engine family, the fastest and most powerful engine on the rails. He's extremely proud and inclined to boast. He's good-hearted, always willing to use his superior strength to help smaller engines out of trouble.
 
 
 
Hank (Thomas & Friends) 
Hank the Crane Engine is an All American Steam Engine. He has the enthusiasm of a cheer leader, the strength of a titan, and the chiselled good looks of a Hollywood Hero. And he proves himself, time and again, to be a Very Useful Engine!
 
 
 
Harvey Crane Engine
Harvey the Crane Engine is a toughie. No job is too big for him when it comes to rescue or loading. He is adventurous, daring and never knowingly lets anyone down. When he first came to the Island, the other engines thought he looked funny, but he proved to be very useful.
 
 
 
Hector 
Hector was being a pain for Bill and Ben when they were bringing him into the yard because he kept banging into the two. Hector, at first, was aggressive. He roared angrily at the engines to "Keep away!". Thomas, determined to shunt him, accidentally pushed him off the line, and after being helped back onto the rails, Hector revealed he was intimidating so he wouldn't have to carry coal, being scared of doing so. Thomas showed him it was actually quite fun.
 
 Henry (Thomas & Friends)
Henry The Green Engine is Sodor's No.3 Engine, he was bought to help with the Building of Sodor many years ago with Thomas and Edward. He has often been known to be accident prone and very unwell in some cases. Poor Henry had a small fireboc which couldn't make very much steam. He had an accident and was sent to crewe where he was rebuilt into an LMS 4-6-0.
 
Hiro the Japnese Engine
Hiro is a Japanese engine who was introduced in "Hero of the Rails". Thomas discovers an old Japanese engine named Hiro and sets out to restore him to his former glory with the help of Kevin, Victor and the rest of the engines, while keeping their secret from Spencer and the Fat Controller.
 
 
Iron 'Arry and Iron Bert work in the scrap yards and smelter sheds. They are grim messengers of doom. They love breaking up steam engines and are determined to rid the Island of Sodor of them, because as far as they are concerned, diesels do everything better! You can tell 'Arry and Bert apart by Bert's beard.
 
 
 
Ivo Hugh 
Ivo Hugh is a little red engine who was built by the workers on Skarloey's railway. He was named after Ivo Hugh, the railway's chief engineer. Everyone, especially Mr. Hugh, was surprised when the engine's name was revealed at a special naming ceremony. Ivo Hugh, pulled by Skarloey, was late getting to his own naming ceremony because of some escaped pigs.
 
 
James
James The Red Engine (No.5) is a somtimes respectful engine and somtiems just plain silly. He likes to think of himself as a really splendid engine. This can occasionally lead to grandiose ideas about the sort of work suitable for such a noble creature, which invariably lands James in trouble. James is a mixed traffic engine, which means he can pull both passenger coaches and freight cars. James arrived after Gordon. He was always getting into trouble with the Fat Controller.
Lady (Thomas & Friends)
Lady is a very special golden engine who holds the secret to The Magic Railroad. With her use of the magic gold dust, she was able to travel to the Island of Sodor and help Thomas the train and the Conductor defeat Diesel 10. 
 
Lord Harry  Lord Harry is a careless and arrogant engine. He thinks that he doesn't have to be as cautious about safety as the older engines, but his recklessness leads to disgrace.
 
 
 Mavis
Mavis is a feisty young diesel engine. She is high-spirited, often doing things without thinking about their consequences. Her lack of experience often leads her into trouble, but she's smart and learns from her mistakes. She has a lot to learn about trucks, but, with Toby's help, she is learning to be a Really Useful Engine.
 
Mighty Mac 
Mighty Mac is two engines in one! Mighty and Mac together are the most unusual engine on the Island of Sodor.
 
 
Mike the Red Engine 
Mike is a small but robust engine, who works on a narrow gauge line. Full of determination and sticking power, he enjoys the occasional tease but acknowledges the importance of teamwork. He loves to blow his shrill whistle, even if it annoys the other engines.
 
Molly (Thomas & Friends)
Molly is a large and powerful bright yellow steam engine. Sir Topham Hatt brought her to the railway to pull empty trucks to the coal plant, and she is sensitive because she thinks her job is not an important one. Thanks to Thomas, however, Molly learns that that even empty wagons can be just as important and useful as loaded ones!
 
Murdoch (Thomas & Friends)
Murdoch is very big and very grand, with ten driving wheels and a large tender, his paint a dark orange. Despite his size and strength, Murdoch enjoys working in peaceful and quiet conditions. He is annoyed by the chattiness of the other engines at first, but later apologizes for his rudeness and seems to enjoy hearing Salty's stories.
 
 
Neil 
Neil is a very kind engine who works at the docks transporting goods from the ships to the island. He may look a little strange, but the engines all like him.
 
 
 
 
Neville (Thomas & Friends)
Neville is a black steam engine who looks more like a diesel engine. When he first came to the Island of Sodor, the engines held a grudge against him because there were rumours that he was planning to bump the steam engines. In the end, these rumours were proven false. Neville is a good and kind engine.
 
 
NW Brakevan 
The NW Brakevan is a spiteful nuisance who is taught a lesson when one of his schemes goes wrong and he gets caught between James and Douglas.
 
 
 
 
Old Slow Coach  Old Slow Coach had a very grand and luxurious interior when she was younger. As the years went by, Old Slow Coach was replaced by newer coaches and was sent to the Scrap Yards. Fortunately, Thomas and Percy came across her one day, and she has once again become Really Useful by serving as a home for the Firemen.
 
 
 Oliver Oliver and his brake van Toad were saved from scrap by Douglas and are very grateful to him. Oliver had a new coat of paint of which he is very proud, and now works happily on Duck's branch line.
 
 
 Percy (Thomas & Friends)

Percy the Saddle Tank Engine is the sixth Engine to arrive on Sodor for helping with Passengers and Freight in the yards. This little chap is normally quite happy puffing around the yard. He's always keen to oblige, a fact of which the other engines are apt to take advantage. Percy often works with Trucks in Quarry's and Harbours. Brendam Docks is usually where percy is seen working and delivering goods. He doesn't like being called names and is always keen to get his own back.

 Peter Sam
Peter Sam is a happy, kind engine. He is often teased by the others, but they love him really. He was tutored by Duke and has great respect for him, despite ribbing him about his age. Being a hard worker by nature, he seldom grumbles about late hours or extra work. (Peter Sam is also known as Stuart.
 
 
 Proteus (Thomas & Friends)
Proteus is a small bright yellow tank engine. He wears a magic lamp hanging upon his funnel. In the story "The Magic Lamp" (on the Tales from the Tracks DVD), Skarloey tells the story that if someone finds the lamp, their wishes are granted.
 
 
 
Rex the Small Railway 
Rex is one of the three engines that work the Small Railway. He is the most level headed of the group which also includes Mike and Bert. He is a hard worker and is very kind, although he enjoys teasing Mike when he gets the chance. He was brought to the Island by Sir Topham Hatt to help bring ballast from the hills for the new branch line.
 
 Rheneas
Rheneas is a tough little engine, whose purpose in life is to work hard and uphold the fine reputation of the railway line. He became famous by bringing a train full of passengers home through terrible weather, even though he was injured himself.
 
 
 
 Rosie (Thomas & Friends)
Rosie is a feisty purple engine who came to the island and idolized Thomas and followed him everywhere. This made Thomas feel angry and frustrated... until he fell into a landside and Rosie saved the day. Since then Rosie has calmed down about her obsession with Thomas.
 
 
 
 Rusty
Rusty is a small, brave diesel engine with orange color. He is very self-assured, and is a dedicated worker. He loves adventure as well as all the other engines, and will do anything to make their lives easier. Fearless in nature and determined, Rusty always smiles in the face of adversity. He is a pal for life.
 
 
S.C. Ruffey 
Pronounced "Scruffey", S.C. Ruffey is an old, experienced truck with a bad attitude and rough habits. He is the leader of the Troublesome Trucks and encourages them to cause as much trouble as possible for the engines.
 
 
 
Salty (Thomas & Friends)
Salty is an old diesel engine who loves working at the docks and telling tales. When he first came to the island, he worked at the quarry, but he missed the sea terribly so Sir Topham Hatt sent him to Brendam Docks. Salty has a special way with the trucks, and Bill and Ben wish they knew his secret!
 
 
 Sir Handel
Sir Handel is a tough old engine who often things he knows all and often thinks he should be boss.
 
 
 
 
 Skarloey
Skarloey the bright red engine is dedicated to doing his job well and is always eager to work.
 
 
 
 
 Smudger
Smudger was a show off engine who rode roughly and often came off the rails. He used to work with Duke, but he caused so many accidents with his reckless behavior that the manager decided to put him out of commission. He now serves as a generator behind the engine shed.
 
 
 Spencer (Thomas and Friends)
Spencer The Silver Bullet Engine is the private engine of the Duke and Duchess who once visited the Island of Sodor. He is very sleek, grand and proud. Gordon was jealous when the other engines declared him the fastest engine in the world. However, Spencer's pride caused him trouble when he doesn't take Gordon's advice to take on plenty of water before tackling the hills. He ran out of water on Gordon's hill, and Gordon had to come to the rescue to pull Spencer to the special party.  
 Splatter
Splatter and his twin Dodge are Diesel 10's silly sidekicks. They plot and scheme, but are not really quite as tough as they would like to think they are.
 
 
 
Stanley (Thomas & Friends)
Stanley is the new tank engine on Sodor, introduced in "The Great Discovery" and everyone's best friend. There's nothing he wouldn't do to help. And if he couldn't help, he'd find someone who could or would. When you're a friend in need, Stanley is a friend indeed!
 
 
 
Stepney (Thomas & Friends)
Stepney is every engine's friend bursting with enthusiasm and always eager to please. He was saved from the scrap yards by Rusty, and now helps out wherever Sir Topham Hatt needs him. When he first arrived at the railway, he was a "special" on Thomas' branch line, which led to a delay for Thomas. Thomas was upset, but quickly learned to work together with Stepney.
 
D261 The Diesel 
Considered by the other engines to be a little snooty, The Diesel (also known as D261) has a "know-it-all" attitude that can really annoy the steam engines on the Island.
 
 
 
Thomas the tank engine
Thomas The Tank Engine was brought for the building of Sodor Railway many years ago. He was always shunting for the bigger engines, and longed to come out of the station yards and see what the world was really like. his chance came after a few months when he was to pull the Express for Henry when he was ill, and failed by leaving the train behind back at the station, but the passengers forgave him for that. Thomas is very happy now and works with his Friends Edward, Henry, Gordon, James and Percy at the station.  
 Toad
Toad is Oliver's Brakevan. They were both saved from scrap by Douglas and are very grateful to him. Toad has no time for the insults of Troublesome Trucks and works happily alongside Oliver on Duck's branch line. Toad is always coupled to Oliver so he is facing backwards. This is fine with since some Troublesome Trucks played a trick on him and he learned that traveling backwards can be very useful.
 
Toby (Thomas & Friends)
Toby The Steam Tram Engine is an old-fashioned tram engine who was brought by Sir Topham Hatt to the Island to help out after his own line closed. He and his faithful coach Henrietta are always happy to work, having once nearly been scrapped. Toby is Number 7 on his line and looks like The LNER J70. Toby was a fine example of a working tram engine and get's along with other very well, sometimes. He work mainly up an outlying quarry line.
Whiff 
Whiff is a cheery, little tank engine with a very special job. He collects rubbish! He has a look and smell all his own! Whiff doesn’t care too much about appearance. What matters to Whiff are getting his job done and getting it done well.
 
 
Wilbert 
Wilbert the Forest Engine is a smart blue saddle-tank engine. His line in the Forest was short, so he was delighted to help out Donald and Douglas on their branch lines.
 
 
 
Wilfred 
Wilfred is a kind old mountain engine. A hard worker, he is very cautious and gets upset at the carelessness of the other engines.
